This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and thus requires that such institutions be the recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

The CHIPS Research and Development Office (CHIPS R&D) oversees multiple programs that operate in coordination with each other, with the CHIPS Program Office, and with microelectronics R&D programs supported by other U.S. federal agencies.  CHIPS R&D programs are informed by industry’s need to accelerate innovation and increase competitiveness in the American semiconductor industry and establish our leadership in the sector for decades to come.  The Policy and Integration office is responsible for the effective execution of CHIPS research programs, in coordination with other CHIPS programs and other government programs.

The position is in the Policy and Integration office within CHIPS R&D .  The Research Intern will provide research and other support for one or more members of the Policy and Integration office  that will inform the development of new policy for the CHIPS programs.

Key responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research in the following areas related to the semiconductor industry:
    • Economic analysis related to the semiconductor industry, including in manufacturing and design, and in the broader investment and R&D ecosystem
    • International issues affecting the semiconductor industry, including policy developments affecting R&D collaboration
    • Metrics for evaluating the success of education and workforce development programs in terms of increasing the availability of workforce-ready semiconductor industry personnel in industry, academia, and government, including from underrepresented communities
  • Summarize and present findings to leadership
  • Participate in developing policy recommendations for the CHIPS R&D office.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated capability to conduct independent research in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), particularly as relevant to informing public or economic policies
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite platforms

Purpose:  The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the  Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor’s degree holders, graduate students, master’s degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.
PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate the administrative functions of the PREP Program.
