Categories of Membership

Institutional Membership

​Institutional Members are institutions of higher education or research organizations that are recognized as tax exempt under IRS Section 501(c)(3) or another IRS regulation, which desire full participation in the activities of SURA.

  • Are represented by the President/Chancellor or Chief Executive Officer, or a designee (the “Member Representative”) as specified by the President/Chancellor or Chief Executive Officer
  • May vote on any matter on which Members are entitled to vote
  • May participate in all SURA activities
  • Are eligible to be elected to the board of directors and committee chair positions
  • May participate in governance committees

Industry Membership

Industry Members are any corporation, partnership, or other for-profit entity that desire participation in some or all of the programmatic activities of SURA. The total number of Industry Members will be limited to 10% of the current number of Institutional Members.

  • Are represented by the President or Chief Executive Officer, or a designee (the “Member Representative”) as specified by the President or Chief Executive Officer.
  • May vote on any matter on which Members are entitled to vote
  • May participate in all SURA activities
  • Are eligible to be elected to the board of directors and committee chair positions
  • May participate in governance committees

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate Members are institutions of higher education or not-for-profit entities that desire some participation in the programmatic activities of SURA and are willing and able to support and further the goals of SURA.

  • May participate in SURA programmatic activities
  • May be represented on a SURA programmatic committee
  • May serve on any SURA ad hoc or special committee
  • May send a designated representative to attend Board meetings at the Board’s invitation
  • May attend the annual Member’s meeting
  • Are not represented on the Board of Directors
  • Do not vote on matters on which Institutional Members and Industry Members are entitled to vote
